Though the new Lexus LM 350 is heavily based on the Toyota Vellfire, it is more than just an even more posh version of the already luxurious donor vehicle. The “LM” name actually means Luxury Mover. 

The Lexus LM is the brand’s first minivan . See how different and similar it is to the Toyota Alphard/Vellfire it’s based on.

The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are sold primarily in Japan, China and Asia. The LM was just launched at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. It will be available in China, but also, probably, across much of Asia.

The two cars are very closely related. Although we don’t have official figures yet, we expect the LM to share the Alphard’s 4,935mm (194.3-in) length, 1,850mm (73-in) width, and 3,000mm (120-in) wheelbase.

The biggest change is up front where the LM gets new Lexus-style headlights, a spindle grille and different bumpers. Somehow it’s less in-your-facelift than the Toyota equivalent.

There are no sheet metal changes to be found anywhere, with the LM differentiated by a S-shaped chrome band across the side windows and a bit more chrome on the side sills.

At the back, the LM has a new tail-light graphics and some additions to the rear bumper.

While the Vellfire is offered with a 2.5L I4, 2.5L hybrid, and 3.5L V6, the LM is only available with the latter two options.

The biggest change occurs at the back, with the Lexus LM available with a executive-style seating area including just two reclining aircraft-like seats, and a closable partition with a built-in 26-in screen.

Cynics will think the LM is nothing but a tarted up Toyota Vellfire, which it shares its basic architecture and powertrain. But the LM is a bit longer, and benefits from more refinement and NVH isolation. Chief of which are double-pane glass windows which further reduces road and wind noise, and Lexus’ Swing-Valve Technology for the suspension, something missing from the Vellfire which explains a lot about the LM 350’s magic carpet ride and separates it further from its Toyota brethren. Key structural components are stiffer and stronger, and there’s more sound deadening to deliver the refinement and solitude one expects from a Lexus. These changes seem minor, but the sum of all these improvements changes the feel and ambiance of the LM 350.
